Dear Neighbor,

This past Sunday, my office was proud to host the 12th Annual Celebrate Cambrian Festival at the Camden Community Center. I have been fortunate to host this event for the past seven years, and have watched the event continue to grow and the community get more involved. For me, Celebrate Cambrian is about family, community pride, and feeling connected to where we live.

Despite the 100+ degree weather, festival-goers braved the summer heat and joined us for some fun on Camden Field. My staff and I enjoyed speaking to residents and handing out waters, fruit, and free t-shirts to those who stopped by our booth.  From the water slide and live music, to the gourmet ice cream truck and ever-growing resource fair, I think it is safe to say Celebrate Cambrian was yet another extraordinary success.

I want to sincerely thank everyone who played a role in bringing the festival to life.  As District 9’s signature event, a great amount of work, coordination, and enthusiasm goes into its success.  Thank you to Camden Community Center staff, the Department of Parks, Recreation, & Neighborhood Services, the Department of Public Works, and our sponsors who made this possible. A special thanks also goes to the 50+ community organizations that participated in the resource fair, our volunteers, our Cambrian-based restaurants, and all who attended the festival to support our community, including residents, public officials, and our public safety officers.  Finally, I have to thank my District 9 Team for orchestrating all the moving parts and ensuring everyone involved had a wonderful time.

If you joined us at Celebrate Cambrian, please consider telling me about your experience by filling out the online survey, linked below. It should only take a moment of your time, and the responses we receive help guide the planning of events in the future.  Thank you in advance for taking the time to share your feedback with me.

If you didn’t have the chance to experience Celebrate Cambrian for yourself, I am sorry we missed you! Check out the photos below (and more on the D9 website), and please be sure to join us next year.  In fact, you can save the date for Celebrate Cambrian 2018, which will take place Sunday, August 26.  I look forward to hearing from you on Celebrate Cambrian or any city-related issue. You can contact my office at or 408-535-4909.

News & Announcements
Labor Day Holiday Closure

San José City Hall and other City offices will be closed on Monday, September 4 in observance of Labor Day. All City offices and libraries will reopen on Tuesday, September 5. The Police and Fire Departments, along with other critical City services, will remain unaffected by the closure.

Update on Fire Station 13

Last month, personnel of Fire Station 13 were temporarily relocated to alternate stations to allow for maintenance cleaning and environmental testing. A series of tests were conducted over several weeks in coordination with various city departments on the advice of an environmental health expert. Although Station 13 was temporarily closed from mid-July through end of August, services to the community remained uninterrupted as Engine 13, Water Tender 13, Truck 13, and Battalion 13 were available for response from adjoining stations. The decision to conduct tests was cautionary and for the health and safety of its employees, and final tests did not indicate a need for any mitigating steps. The target date of re-opening was end of August, and crews began responding from Station 13 on August 30.  The Fire Department thanks the community for their patience and understanding throughout this process.  Any questions can be directed to the Fire Department at 408-794-7000.

Cooling Centers Open Through Labor Day

Roosevelt, Bascom, Seven Trees, Mayfair, Camden and Southside community centers will remain open until 9:00 PM Friday, September 1, and Saturday, September 2.  They will also open their doors on Sunday, September 3 and Labor Day, Monday, September 4 from 1:00 PM - 9:00 PM.  When temperatures reach or exceed 97 degrees, the hubs serve as "cooling centers" and extend their hours during the week and on Saturday's.  Although typically closed on Sundays and Holidays, the hubs will be open this holiday weekend.

Mexican Flag Raising Ceremony

Please join Vice Mayor Carrasco, Mayor Liccardo, and Councilmembers Rocha, Peralez, Jimenez and Arenas for the Mexican Flag Raising on Friday, September 15 at 11:30 AM in the City Hall Plaza.  A 12:00 PM reception in the Rotunda will follow the ceremony. Parking is available under City Hall (entrance on 6th Street). For more information, contact Omar Torres at 408-535-4905.

Dispose of Unused/Unwanted Medications

Do you have unused or expired medicine? Don’t rush to flush!  When unused or expired medicines are disposed of down the drain or flushed down the toilet, they flow through the sanitary system to the Wastewater Facility, which was not designed to remove all pharmaceutical compounds. Trace amounts may pass through the Wastewater Facility and be released into the San Francisco Bay. Do your part by safely disposing of your unused or expired medicines for free at a drop-off bin location.
