Back-to-School Safety Tips

Summer vacation is coming to an end, and students and families will be jumping back into their routines. As traffic increases to-and-from school, it is especially important for all of us sharing the road that we remember to slow down and pay extra attention. Whether you’re a walking, biking, or driving, your behavior plays a huge role in keeping everyone on our streets safe. Please remember to take extra caution before and after school hours. While they may seem like common sense, a few safety precautions go a long way toward keeping our children safe:

  • Slow down and obey the speed limits.
  • Come to a complete stop, and checking carefully for children on sidewalks and in crosswalks.
  • Eliminate distractions like using your cell phone or eating while driving.
  • Watch for bicycles.  If your child rides a bicycle, require that he or she wear a helmet.
  • Share the road with pedestrians, bicycles, motor vehicles, and school buses.
  • Understand that there is increased traffic during peak hours. Allow for more travel time to get to and from work or school.  More resources at AAA.com.
