Dear Neighbors, Happy August! City Council is back in session after the July break. As your San José City Council returns to work, our children return to school. Treasure these back to school moments. As an empty nester, I can tell you that these special moments go by all too quickly. Over the years, I have learned a back-to-school tip or two that I'd like to share. Check out these tips in the "News and Announcements" section of this newsletter.
Speaking of news and announcements, the 2019 Celebrate Cambrian Festival is just around the corner! The festival will be co-hosted by the Camden Community Center on Sunday, August 25th from 11am to 3pm. We have activities for every member of the family!
If you're looking for entertainment, you'll find plenty! Listen to live music from the local blues band Pearl Alley, scale a 25ft rock climbing wall, use the photo booth, a water slide, or bounce houses, plus plenty of games!
Sit back, relax, and enjoy food from local eateries like Adelita's, Blue Rock BBQ, and Best Taste Asian Cuisine. New this year is a wine and beer garden.
Also available is our community resource fair. Local organizations are ready to provide you with the information and resources that matter most to your family.
In addition to all of the fun, we will be giving away two roundtrip tickets from Alaska Airlines, to anywhere they fly.
This event has been generously underwritten by our many sponsors. Check out the list of contributors.
Join us for the party! I'll see you on the 25th!
Warm Regards,
Thank you to all the wonderful neighbors that hosted events in their communities. We had a blast visiting you during National Night Out!
The new school year is an exciting time of the year! Whether you are a motorist, bicyclist, or pedestrian, let’s work together to keep each other safe. Be patient and stay alert! 1. Visit the school. Walking or riding the route to school can make a world of difference. Noticing the crossing guards and observing school patrols can be very helpful. Also we mustn't let our children forget: No talking to strangers!
2. Introduce yourself to your child’s teacher. Forming a strong relationship with your child’s teacher can be incredibly meaningful to you, the teacher, and your student. Consider asking them about their preferred method of communication.
3. Prioritize homework. Making homework a daily habit creates a schedule that can lead to better academic performance.
4. Set up a study area. Studies have shown that a specified place for students to start and end their homework helps remove distractions, and focuses the brain.
5. Make Healthy Meals. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. A balanced breakfast and lunch helps students perform better in school. For extra bonus points, nutritious meals can be made together with your student at home, to encourage healthy eating.
6. Allow yourself enough time to get to school on time. Pay attention to the road. Drive cautiously around schools. Please don't park in neighbors driveways.
August is the month most of our children return to school. This means more pedestrians, more bicycles and more traffic. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, between 2008-2017 there were 264 school-age children killed in school-transportation-related crashes. Many were walking, waiting for a bus or another vehicle, or riding a bicycle or other modes of transportation. So be alert - Drive defensively. Helpful hints to keep everyone safe:
Drivers
- The car shouldn’t move until everyone is buckled up.
- Follow the speed limit.
- Put your cell phone down; possibly keep it in the glove box. It can be a deadly distraction.
- Plan for increased travel time and heavier traffic.
- Be good neighbors and do not block or park in driveways.
Bicyclists
- Always were a helmet.
- Ride in the same direction as traffic and obey the traffic signs and signals (motor vehicles rely upon you to follow the rules).
- Plan a safe route using internet mapping, and our newly installed bicycle lanes!
Pedestrians
- Use the sidewalk whenever possible, or walk on the edge of the roadway if one is not available; facing oncoming traffic.
- Cross at identified crosswalks, and if one is not available, you are much more visible to motorists if you cross at corners.
- Do not cross against the light, or “jaywalk”.
- Please limit the use of your phones while walking in high traffic areas.
August is National Traffic Awareness Month
Traffic safety is a top priority for us which is why our office has focused on installing traffic calming measures on many of our most congested roadways, especially near schools and busy intersections. View a list of the projects our office has successfully spearheaded below:
Traffic Calming Measures:
- Traffic calming measures at the intersection of New Jersey Avenue and Foxworthy Avenue.
- Enhanced crosswalk with flashing beacons on Koch Lane at Marsha Way.
- Installation of an enhanced crosswalk with flashing beacons on Leigh Avenue at Charmeran Avenue.
Additionally, we continue to meet with residents to listen to their safety concerns around District 9 while collaborating with the Department of Transportation to incorporate other traffic calming measures and increasing pedestrian safety and visibility.
Crossing Guards: Another way to increase traffic safety is to increase the amount crossing guards in our community. Crossing Guards help create a safe environment for school children during drop-off and pick-up hours. The City of San José has a shortage of crossing guards, and they are looking for folks interested in providing a safe route to/from school for our children. Learn more about San José Police Department's School Safety and Education Unit and Crossing Guard Program or apply to become a Crossing Guard here: SJPD Crossing Guard Program.
Pavement Project Update: San José currently has paving work happening on over 120 major and local street segments around the city - our new record for our city! The Department of Transportation (DOT) plans to pave and maintain nearly 300 miles of residential streets in 2019. See which streets are scheduled for maintenance this year. DOT also provides a weekly update from our pavement maintenance team, which provides you the ability to track their progress. Are you wondering how streets are selected or which type of pavement maintenance is scheduled for your local street? - View frequently asked questions
In trying times like these, I am reminded of the beautiful words of Maya Angelou. Her poem, Human Family, begins by reading, “I note the obvious differences, in the human family. Some of us are serious, some thrive on comedy.” Throughout, and most prominently at the end of her poem, Maya Angelou gracefully reminds us of a message that we should all remember. She says that “We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike.” I could not agree more. No matter our differences, we are all human, and we are all much more alike, than we are unalike. The Gilroy Garlic Shootings, were as shocking as they were saddening. This moment is a reminder to everyone that our region is resilient, and we will move forward from this stronger than before. Together, we will show everyone just how strong Gilroy was, is, and will always be.
Let us show compassion and treat each other with respect. For those who wish to contribute monetarily, the Gilroy Foundation, in partnership with the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, has established a charitable fund to provide relief to victims of the terrible shooting. For your convenience, we are linking this charitable fund here: Gilroy Garlic Festival Relief Fund. Following tragic events, it is common to experience anxiety, sadness, or fear. You may benefit from counseling support. Anyone can dial 2-1-1 for access to health and human services such as mental health counseling. It is a free non-emergency, confidential service that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Join us for the 14th Annual Celebrate Cambrian Festival. We have activities for the whole family. We will have local food vendors, live music, a beer and wine garden, a resource fair, bounce houses, a water slide, and a rock climbing wall!
You don't want to miss this incredible event!

Summer 2019 Coyote Creek Clean-up
Please join the Keep Coyote Creek Beautiful group and help collect trash along Coyote Creek before it makes its way into the Bay. Plastic objects pose a large threat to our ecosystem and few bacteria can degrade them, and that means, our discarded grocery bags, milk jugs, plastic utensils, clam shells & other packaging are making their way into the oceans where they may harm fish and other marine animals. Group registration available and community service hours are available. If you are interested in volunteering, please RSVP here - https://190810-cleanup.eventbrite.com
Date: Saturday Aug. 10th Time: 9am - 12pm Location: 1117 Woodborough Dr.
