Dear Neighbor,

Halloween is upon us, and while it's a fun holiday for kids, it can be a worrisome one for parents. For a fun and safe Halloween, please remember these tips:

Adults: Welcome trick-or-treaters with your porch lights and any exterior lights on. Patrol your street occasionally to discourage speeding motorists, acts of malicious mischief and crimes against children. Report any suspicious or criminal activity to your police department immediately. In San Jose, call 911 or 408-277-8911 from a cell phone. Do not give homemade or unwrapped treats to children.

Motorists: Exercise extreme caution when driving a vehicle. Be on the alert for excited children darting out into traffic, whose vision may be obscured by masks.

Trick-or-Treaters: Be observant of others and the traffic around you. Look in all directions before crossing the street and obey all traffic signals. Walk, never run across the street. Use sidewalks, not the street, for walking. Carry flashlights and/or add reflective tape to costumes.  Chilrdren should use the buddy system or be accompanied by adults.

For more safety tips, please visit the San Jose Police Department at www.sjpd.org or call the Crime Prevention Unit at 408-277-4133.

Wishing you a safe and happy Halloween!
