Flood Preparedness Tips & Sandbags

As we enter the wet weather season, residents need to monitor water levels in creeks and storm drains near their homes.  Major flood protection projects have been completed in Santa Clara County since 1982, but urban flooding can still occur along other portions of the rivers and creeks.

Heavy winter rains can cause flooding in minutes. The heaviest rains and flooding are most likely to occur between December and March, so now’s the time to begin preparing.  The Santa Clara Valley Water District offers a Wet Weather Checklist to help you and your family prepare in advance of potential flooding.

Sand Bag Information: Filled sand bags are available late November through April.  At certain times, sties may be stocked with sand and empty bags.  Sites are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Residents should bring their shovels, and consider bringing assistance to load bags. San Jose locations are listed below:

  • City Main Yard, 1404 Mabury Road (self-fill, sand and empty bags provided)
  • City Central Service Yard, 1661 Senter Road at Phelan Avenue
  • Santa Clara Valley Water District Winfield Warehouse, 5905 Winfield Boulevard, between Blossom Hill Road and Coleman Avenue (bag pickup street access only)

For questions, please visit www.valleywater.org/services/sandbagsites.aspx.

Holiday Safety Tips

Shopping Tips: When shopping, park your car in a well-lit area.  Place packages or bags in the trunk of your car and lock it. If you have no trunk, be certain they are out of sight. Parked cars should have all windows tightly closed and all doors locked. Never leave packages or bags unattended in a store or at a register. Purses should be carried under the arm and wallets in an inside coat pocket

Online Shopping Tips: Shop using secure websites, and use credit cards instead of debit cards.  Choose safe delivery options, including delivery appointments, delivery to trusted neighbors, local stores, or drop off locations such as Amazon Lockers or UPS stores.

Home Safety: Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave the house, even if you will only be gone for a few minutes. Don't put large displays of holiday gifts in view of your windows.  Don't leave gift boxes out during garbage days. When going on trips or just out for the evening, use automatic timers to turn indoor lights off and on to make it appear you are at home.  For more prevention tips and resources, visit http://www.sjpd.org/.

Stop Junk Mail San Jose

Over 100 billion pieces of unsolicited mail are stuffed into U.S. mailboxes each year. Not only is junk mail simply annoying, it is also extremely wasteful. Most of the 100 billion pieces of paper are thrown away, contributing greatly to this country’s waste levels.

During the holidays, you may find your mailbox full of unwanted catalogs and solicitations. Reducing unwanted mail is an easy way to unclutter your life and stop waste at the source. Residents can sign up for Stop Junk Mail San Jose, a free service provided by Catalog Choice, to eliminate junk mail. Sign up today to stop unwanted mail!

Stop Junk Mail San Jose is a project of the San Jose Green Vision Resource Team – a partnership between the City of San Jose and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.
